The back says, "The Sentinal: Massard Prairie: July 27th, 1864." Retaken by Federal forces in September of 1863, Fort Smith, Arkanas found itself surrounded by Confederate forces for the remainder of the war. Without adequate food for their mounts, the Federal cavalry chose to graze their horses on the grass of Massard Prairie. This U.S. cavalry picked watches, unaware of the nearly 600 Confederate and Native American soldiers that will soon unleash an attack that will be one of the greatest Southern victories in the Fort Smith region. - Comes in archival sleeve. - Don't miss the 'Variety Gift Box' listing!
